There are countless hiking possibilities in Transylvania. Through wild forests, endless meadows or picturesque villages you can experience the nature and culture of the country. We offer you hiking trips of different levels of difficulty. The following would be an example of a light hiking trip for several days. Based on your wishes, we can offer you customized trips.
Hiking trip – Following the trail of the Transylvanian Saxons
Day 1: Today you meet your guide at the Sibiu airport (or other point of arrival) and you will be transfered to the hotel. During the city walk you will see the Grand Square (Piaţa Mare), the Lesser Square (Piaţa Mică), the Evangelic Church and the Orthodox Cathedral.
Day 2: (4-5 hours hike) In the morning we visit the fortified church of Cisnădioara, one of the few remaining romanic basilikas in Transylvania. From Cisnădioara we start our hiking through the hilly landscape along the foot of the Cindrel Mountains to the village of Răşinari, a typical Romanian Transylvanian village. We will have dinner at a peasant family where we will be served traditional food and beavareges. Afterwards a bus will take us back to Sibiu to spend the night.
Day 3: (4 hours hike) In the morning we will be taken by bus to the city of Mediaş. On our way there, we will also visit the fortified church in Axente Sever. After arriving in Mediaş we will show you the town and then start today’s hike. Our target for the day will be the village of Bazna, well known as a spa resort. The hike will take us through a lovely forest where we may luckily encounter wildlife. From Bazna we will be taken by bus to Ceatatea de Baltă for winetasting, where we will get to know local wines. We will have dinner and spend the night back in Mediaş.
Day 4: (4 hours hike) Today we will head to Biertan, one of the most massively fortified churches in Transylvania and former seat of the Lutheran Evangelic Bishop in Transylvania. After visiting the church we will continue our bus ride to Mălâncrav, where we will find a beautiful manor formerly belonging to the Hungarian aristocratic family Apafy, built in the 18th century. After lunch, we will start today’s hike. Through the same deciduous forest found here by the settlers from the regions West of the Rhine when they arrived here some 800 Years ago, we will reach the village of Criş. In the evening we will be taken by bus to Sighişoara to spend the night.
Day 5: In the morning we will make a walk through the original town on top of a hill. It has been named by UNESCO as a World Heritage site due to its well-preserved medievel character. During the walk you will have the opportunity to meet a representative of the so called Mihai Eminescu Trust, whose patron is Charles. Prince of Wales, an organization which tries to encourage sustainable development in the villages of Southern Transylvania. After this introduction to the subject we will be taken by bus to the village of Viscri, where you will be shown how the activity of the trust helped to preserve the traditional houses and to rise local crafts. Here we can also talk to some of the Saxons who did not leave Romania during the massive exodus after the Revolution in 1989. In the evening we reach Braşov by bus and have a walk through the city, where, amongst other interesting sites, we will see the largest Gothic Church in Southeastern Europe. We will spend the night in Braşov.
Day 6 : (4 hours hike) In the morning the bus will take us through the Prahova Valley to Sinaia, where we find the summer residence of the royal family of Romania. After a visit to the castle and lunch, a cable car will take us to the plateau of the Bucegi mountains at an altitude of 2200m. Here we will take a hike to the “Sphynx” and the “Babele” (The old women), a group of stones sculpted for ages by wind erosion. Dinner and accommodation will be back in Braşov.)
Day 7 : Today we will return to Sibiu, but on our way back we will make a stop at the “Transfagaraşan”, the most spectacular road in Romania, crossing the Carpathian Mountains in north to south direction. Here we will have a short hike to the Bâlea Waterfall and afterwards we will have lunch at a trout breeding farm in Albota. You will have the rest of the afternoon free for sightseeing in Sibiu. Dinner and accommodation will be in Sibiu. (2 hours hike)
Day 8 : Transfer to the airport (or other), where we will say our farewells.
